Mapping Community Level Characteristics Associated with Opioid Related Deaths in Massachusetts
Using GIS, students will map community level characteristics associated with opioid related deaths in Massachusetts.
Overview
First students in Research Methods will be asked to map 2016 Opioid overdose fatalities in Massachusetts. They will be asked to examine the overdose rate by city/town. They will need to be able to identify the higher and lower rates, including noting standard deviations among mean fatalities by city/town. Then, students will be asked to hypothesize correlations between community characteristics and opioid fatalities in Massachusetts, and to create a map with these characteristics and fatalities from 2016. Determine and report on centrality data, means, high and low rates. Was their hypothesis supported? Report findings.
