Small groups will each be assigned a region or country in the Islamic world. Working collaboratively, the group should research the historical development of Islam in that region/country. The group should gather information on how Islam came to that region; how it affected indigenous social, political and economic structures over time; interactions with neighboring countries/regions; and the major historical events in that region/country during the relevant period. This information should then be synthesized into a group presentation that accompanies a GoogleEarth tour highlighting the main geographical context (including urban geographies) of their research. Each group should conclude their presentation with a hypothesis generated by their geographical research on GoogleEarth and the outline of a research plan that would refine/test that hypothesis.
